Scottish Arts Council Young Scot Action Fund Films: A canny craftsmaker
Catrina Rose (13) Isle of Tiree received funding towards the cost of making jewellery from recycled aluminium drink cans.
My name is Catrina Rose and. I’m 14 and l live in the island of Tiree. I’ve been making things since l was very young and I’ve always enjoyed making things. I make the trees by collecting a can from the roadside and washing the outside and cutting the top off and washing the inside and cutting it around in a thin strip and then l start at the top and l attach the can and bend it on and fix it there with wire at the top and beads which l bend round the frame to secure it.
Working with Scottish Arts Council Young Scot Action Fund
It was important for me to get help from Young Scot, so l could get money to buy the materials l needed and tools so l could go on with this project. The project was about recycling an aluminium can to make it into a nice attractive tree so that l could sell it at Christmas and give a small donation to the TEAR group, Tyree recycling group. I came up with it because l was thinking about cans and what l could do to recycle them what l could make them into and l got a Christmas card with a triangular tree on it, so l decided to try and make the can into a tree with a frame. It was pretty easy to get help from Young Scot. They just gave you a form to fill in all about your project and you sent photographs and a long statement all about it and everything and they just sent back the letter and the money.
Next Steps
Doing this project has given me a lot of confidence and l am very pleased they thought my trees were a very good idea. The project has given me lots more ideas like making jewellery and doing other shapes and sizes of trees, and how like l could go on to Art college and then maybe later on in my life set up my own business recycling things and selling them.
Young Scot gratefully acknowledges the support of the Scottish Arts Council and all the young people that helped make this film. |
