Scottish Arts Council joins forces with Location One in New York

11/09/2007

The Scottish Arts Council has announced exciting plans to join forces with leading New York arts organisation Location One to provide Scotland’s visual artists with more opportunities to meet and work with key figures and organisations in the New York arts scene and help promote their work to an international audience.

Support will be provided for an artist to live and work in New York from March – June 2008 and take part in Location One’s renowned International Residency Programme which is open to artists working in painting, sculpture, installation, video or photography. Projects with a focus on visual, performing and digital arts collaborations and the use of new technologies are particularly encouraged.

The new partnership has been developed to build on the success of the Scottish Arts Council’s existing New York residency programme which has seen artists such as Rosalind Nashashibi and Lucy Skaer produce significant new work during their time in New York, as well as raising the international profile of Scotland’s visual arts.

As part of the residency artists will have the chance to take part in workshops, gallery tours, openings, performances and artistic discussions, providing them with the opportunity to meet and work with other artists across the arts.  They will also meet with curators, critics, and established artists at Location One and take part in interviews about their work which will be aired on the Location One website.

Artists will have access to studio space in the city’s exciting Soho district equipped with the latest graphics, video and internet software, will receive individual support and assistance with the creation and development of their work and have the opportunity to exhibit their work during their time at Location One.

Commenting on the new partnership Amanda Catto, Head of Visual Arts at the Scottish Arts Council said: ‘The Scottish Arts Council is delighted to be a partner in the International Residency Programme operated by Location One in New York.  This programme provides a unique environment where artists from different countries and with different perspectives can meet and exchange ideas.

‘The successful artist will be encouraged to experiment and develop new work and will be provided with excellent technical, critical and curatorial support.  We’ll support artists to source accommodation in New York to ensure that we can meet their needs and we hope that by working in this way we will encourage people with families or dependents to apply.’

Nathalie Anglès, Director of the International Residency Programme, Location One added: ‘The Scottish Arts Council's support of Location One's international residency programme creates a fantastic opportunity to bring forward emerging talent from the Scottish arts scene which is beyond question one of the most exciting today.’
