Who can apply?
We accept applications from individual artists and organisations.
Individual artists
We fund visual artists, dancers, musicians, craft makers, actors and writers of literary works or playwrights. You must be working at a professional level within your artform, and we would normally expect you to be based in Scotland or the activity to take place in Scotland. Please refer to the specific information in the individuals guidelines to ensure there are no restrictions to the fund you wish to apply for.
Organisations
You should primarily be an arts organisation though we welcome applications from other organisations seeking funding for arts activities such as: local authorities, registered charities and other organisations which cannot distribute profits. Commercial organisations and public sector agencies may also apply. Please refer to the organisations guidelines for specific restrictions.

Does it matter if I use an old application form?
It is vital that you ensure that you are using the latest version of our application form. We update our guidelines and application forms at regular intervals (on average twice a year), and this sometimes involves changes to the information that we ask for. Please contact our Help Desk to check that you have the most up to date version. Please do not attempt to update the forms yourself.

Who do I send my application to?
Please send your application and all relevant enclosures to the Grants Department, Scottish Arts Council, 12 Manor Place, Edinburgh, EH3 7DD.
Please note the following important points:
- Your application must arrive no later than 5pm on the deadline date. We are happy to receive applications up to four weeks in advance of the deadline date, but are unable to accept late applications.
- If you do not give us all the information we ask for, including all supporting material, we will not be able to process your application and it will be rejected. We will not normally contact you to request missing information/documents. We will not accept a resubmission of an amended application after the deadline date has passed.
- Please do not address your application to any department other than the Grants Department as this will delay its progress.
- Please do not fax or email your application form, as we cannot accept it in this format. We can only accept a hard copy with your signature.
- Your application should be presented in the simplest format possible (stapled or clipped), to make photocopying easier for panel meetings.
- Please ensure that you retain photocopies of the application form and all supporting documents for your own files.

Are students in full-time education eligible to apply?
Students in full-time formal education (ie. 16 hours or more per week) at the date of applying are not eligible. Applications may be considered from individuals who are working at a professional level within the arts and undertaking a part-time course of study, but this will depend on the nature of your project and how it relates to your course. We cannot fund any activity which is related to courses of formal education.

Where can I find information on other sources of funding?
Our information sheet Funding Sources for the Arts in Scotland lists other funding sources such as trusts and foundations.
The Directory of Social Change produces a series of books and CDRoms with information on trusts and foundations.
The Scottish Arts Council is the administrator for the Dewar Arts Awards and Arts Trust of Scotland. Please note that these trust funds are completely separate from our funding initiatives.
Dewar Arts Awards are by nomination only and are aimed at exceptionally talented young people aged 15 - 25. For further details go to the Dewar Arts Awards website.
Arts Trust of Scotland supports emerging artists who live in Scotland and are either in full-time education or out of education for not more than five years. For further information and an application form, contact the Help Desk 0845 603 6000 or e-mail: help.desk@scottisharts.org.uk

How can I get a job in the arts?
We do not have a list of job opportunities in the arts, but vacancies within the Scottish Arts Council and other arts organisations in Scotland are advertised on our website and in our ib newsletter.
You can also find opportunities in arts magazines such as a-n, the List magazine and Stage. A weekly updated opportunities service for artists and arts professionals is published by a-n. Also some vacancies are advertised in arts venues. Often jobs within the arts are through word of mouth, and many arts practitioners work on a freelance basis for a wide variety of organisations and local authorities.
