Support towards the costs of publishing works of literary or cultural merit that may represent some financial risk is available to Scottish-based publishers.

Publications: Magazines

We invite applications from editors of magazines which can demonstrate high quality content in terms of new work in poetry, fiction, non-fiction or other artforms and/or review and debate on critical and cultural issues.

Level of grants: While there is no fixed minimum or maximum level of grant, awards are likely to be in the range £2,000 – £14,000

Literature and Book Festivals

Support is available towards the costs of a range of festivals of high quality and of national and/or regional strategic importance.  Support is primarily directed towards a percentage of the costs of bringing writers to these events.

This fund does not support occasional or one-off events.

Level of grants: £2,000 - maximum of £20,000

Storytelling Events and Festivals

Support is available towards the costs of a variety of storytelling events and projects promoted within Scotland.   Funding would cover storytellers’ fees, travel and subsistence, publicity, venue hire and other associated costs.

Level of grants: £1,500 - £5,000

Writing and Storytelling Fellowships

Applications are invited from suitable host organisations to employ writers or storytellers to develop their own work within specific communities. Fellows will work on their own projects and may also interact with specified groups within the host environment.

Level of grants: Grants are available to cover 50% of the writer’s fee, which would typically be a minimum of £18,000 per annum or pro rata.

Literature and Storytelling Development Workers

Applications for full-time Literature Development Worker posts are invited from suitable host organisations with a specific brief for literature, literacy and readership development. Minimum duration: one year.

Level of grants: Grants are available to cover postholder’s salary, which would typically be a minimum of £18,000 per annum or pro rata

Fast-track Translation

Support is available for publishers based outside the United Kingdom to help with the payment of translators’ fees for translating the work of Scottish writers.  Funding will be offered in the form of a grant which will normally not exceed 50% of the total translation fees, although in exceptional cases up to 90% of the fee can be covered.  We cannot fund a project which has already started or already taken place.

Level of grants: £100 – maximum of up to 50% of translation fee, subject to a limit of £2,500

We regret that we are currently unable to accept applications to our Fast Track funds for activity taking place on or after 1 April 2010.

Applications accepted at any time until 26 February 2010, but must be submitted at least 4 weeks before the project start date.

Fast-track = Fast-track (applications accepted throughout the year)


Organisations may also be eligible to apply for Funding Across Artforms.
