Visual Arts funding priorities – what funds are available?

Creative and Professional Development

To assist individual artists with the costs of creating and presenting work, for example research, production of new work, materials or exhibition costs, as well as professional development.

Funding is also available to assist curators with professional development costs relating to curatorial practice. The maximum funding curators can apply for is £3,000. 

There are three fixed levels of bursaries available:
£1,500, £3,000, £5,000

Visual Artists' Awards of £15,000



Up to 6 awards of £15,000 each are available for the financial year 1 April 2008 to 31 march 2009

Awards of £15,00 are available to visual artists to supplement or replace existing income in order to provide a period of time for exploration and experimentation.

Amsterdam Residency

One bursary of £16,000 is offered for a 12 month residency with a rent free apartment in Amsterdam.  The residency is intended to provide an opportunity for an artist to research and develop his/her work (commencing February 2009).

New Media Residency



A bursary of £10,000 is offered to support an artist for nine months (October 2008 - June 2009) to research and develop their work at the University of Abertay, Dundee.

New York Residency

An opportunity for a visual artist to spend five months (1 February 2009 to 30 June 2009) on the Location One international residency programme in New York.

Film and Video

Artists' Film and Video

The Artists' Film and video fund is run jointly by the Scottish Arts Council and Scottish Screen to support the best innovative and experimental work by visual artists working in film and video.

Level of funds can be between £5,000 to £15,000

Local Authority Artist Awards

Some local authorities operate regional schemes for artists in partnership with the Scottish Arts Council offering grants up to a maximum of £1,000. 

Please note: that you may apply to either the Scottish Arts Council or to your local authority for a particular project - you cannot apply to both simultaneously for the same project.
