Creative and Professional Development

Bursaries of £1,500, £3,000 and £5,000 are available to artists to help with costs associated with their creative and professional development, for example materials, research, production of new work, a residency, costs relating to an exhibition or publication etc.

This fund is also for curators to apply for creative and professional development costs. The maximum funding curators can apply for is £3,000.

Visual Artists' Awards of £15,000

Up to 5 awards of £15,000 are available to provide a period of time for exploration and experimentation and may supplement or replace existing income. An award is an investment in the development of future work based upon the quality and ambition  of previous and current practice.

Amsterdam Residency

A bursary of £16,000 is offered for a 12 month residency with a rent free apartment in Amsterdam. The residency is intended to provide an opportunity for an artist to research and develop his/her work (commencing February 2010).

Banff Residency

A bursary of £6,000 is offered to support an artist for six months (March 2010 - August 2010) to research and develop their work at the world-renowned Banff New Media Institute in Canada. The residency provides accommodation, studio access, meals, flights and equipment/technical costs in addition to the £6,000 bursary.

New York Residency

An opportunity for a visual artist to spend five months (1 February 2010 - 30 June 2010) on the Location One international residency programme in New York. The residency provides a well-resourced artist's studio and the artist will receive a bursary of £7,500, together with an accommodation allowance for the five month period.

Artists' Film and Video

This fund is run jointly by the Scottish Arts Council and Scottish Screen to support the best innovative and experimental work by visual artists working in film and video. Please note: the film or video must be the artwork.

Visual Artist Awards Schemes in partnership with the Scottish Arts Council

Some local authorities and organisations, in partnership with the Scottish Arts Council, operate regional schemes for artists, offering grants of up to £1,000. 

Please note: that you may apply to either the Scottish Arts Council or to your local authority for a particular project - you cannot apply to both simultaneously for the same project.
