Richard Holloway

Richard Holloway (Chair)

Richard is a writer and broadcaster.  He is the author of twenty-eight books, including Godless Morality, Looking in the Distance and The Monster and the Saint.  He was Bishop of Edinburgh and Primus (Archbishop) of the Scottish Episcopal Church until he stood down in 2000.

Richard was Gresham Professor of Divinity in the City of London 1997-2001. He was a member of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority from its inception in 1990 until 1997, and chaired its ethics committee.  He was a member of the Broadcasting Standards Commission from 2000-2003.  He became Chairman of the Scottish Arts Council in 2005.  A frequent broadcaster, he has presented a number of television series, including Holloway’s Road and The Sword and the Cross and also BBC Radio Scotland’s flagship book programme, Cover Stories.  He is Guest Director of the Edinburgh International Book Festival 2009.  He is in constant demand as a lecturer and after-dinner speaker.

Ray Macfarlane

Ray Macfarlane (Deputy chair)

Ray Macfarlane was appointed to the Board of Scottish Screen in April 1997, re-appointed in April 2001 and appointed chair of Scottish Screen in September 2002.

Ray is a qualified solicitor and was formerly a Senior Director of HBOS plc, in a role which included the management of the Bank's extensive portfolio of Arts sponsorships. She has held several senior posts in economic development including that of Managing Director, Scottish Enterprise, where she had responsibility for all national and international operations.  She is a Trustee of the National Galleries of Scotland, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and Honorary Co-Chair of BAFTA Scotland. Previous directorships include non-executive roles with St Mary's Music School, the Scottish Institute of Sport and BT Scotland.

Dinah Caine

 

Dinah Caine

Dinah Caine is Chief Executive Officer of Skillset, the Sector Skills Council for the Audio Visual Industries.  Skillset is currently one of four SSCs ‘pathfinding’ and implementing the new Sector Skills Agreements across the UK and received the 2006 award at the Scottish Skills Conference for the skills organisation that had had most impact on its sector.

She has previously been a Board Member of the London Skills Commission and the Northern Ireland Film and TV Commission.  She is currently a Board Member of Scottish Screen and a member of the British Screen Advisory Council and has recently served as a member of the London 2012 Employment and Skills Taskforce.  She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and has been awarded Fellowship of the Royal Television Society for her outstanding contribution to the Television Industry.

Dinah was awarded the OBE for her services to the Media Industries in the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Honours List in 2002.

Donald Emslie

Donald Emslie

Former Acting Chief Executive of SMG plc since May 2007, having been Chief Executive, SMG Television and a Director of SMG plc since 1999.

He is non-executive Chairman of ITV Network Limited, the Royal Lyceum Theatre (Edinburgh) and the Scottish Industry Skills Panel; a non-executive Director of Skillset UK and Film Academy Scotland (and chairs the Academy's Advisory Board); Honorary Chair of BAFTA Scotland; and a Fellow and Vice-President of the RTS.  He was appointed a Director of Scottish Screen in July 2000 and is Chair of the Joint Audit Committee of the Scottish Arts Council and Scottish Screen.

Steve Grimmond

Steve Grimmond

Steve Grimmond is the Head of Community Services at Fife Council, with current responsibilities spanning culture, sport & leisure, environment and community learning and development.

Previously he has held posts at Aberdeenshire Council, before becoming Director of Arts and Heritage and then Director of Leisure and Arts at Dundee City Council.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Society for Arts & Science; a COSLA Adviser on Sport and the Arts;  Executive member and former Chair of VOCAL (Voice of Chief Officers for Cultural, Community and Leisure Services in Scotland); and a board member of sportscotland.  He is a practising artist.

Charles Lovatt

Charles Lovatt

Following a 20 year career leading the international technology trading company that he founded in 1985, Charles Lovatt was appointed to the Board of Scottish Screen in 2005 where he chairs the Investment Committee.

His business interests include music publishing, and rights management - a Director of London-based Cacophony Music since 1986. He sits on the Board of Management of Elmwood College in Cupar and chairs the Quality Assurance Committee. More recently, he has been co-opted as Trustee of The National Library of Scotland; he also serves as Trustee for the Arts Trust of Scotland. Today, he writes and speaks on subjects of Innovation, Strategic Marketing and Corporate Governance.

Barbara McKissack

Barbara McKissack

Barbarra is an independent producer working in television, drama and feature films.  She has executive produced on a range of television including Sea of Souls, Monarch of the Glen, Tinseltown, River City, England Expects and The Key as well as a number of feature films including Ratcatcher and Morvern Callar.

Jim McSharry

Jim McSharry

Jim McSharry began his artistic career as a performance poet in the 1980's working with Jim Kelman and was published in anthologies of radical poetry (Neruda press) and gravitated to the standup scene before becoming involved with Theatre Workshop Edinburgh and becoming part of the first inclusive mainstream theatre in Europe (supported by the Scottish Arts Council).

He has been involved both as a performer in theatre and a director, has been involved in screen writing as well as appearing in shorts films by Nabil Shaban, Alice Nelson 'Vocation' and 'Maps with Gaps', winner of the Scottish documentary prize 2007.  Jim was a founding Director of the Centre for Inclusive Living Glasgow, and has been involved in many initiatives in both the arts and social sectors concerning the positive inclusion of disabled people and excluded groups.  Jim also develops and delivers Disability Equality Training in the arts.

John Mulgrew

John Mulgrew OBE

John Mulgrew is Chair of Learning and Teaching Scotland and is a member of the Smith Group, advising on making better provision for young people who are not in education, employment or training and serves on a number of Boards and Advisory Committees.

He was Director of Educational and Social Services in East Ayrshire Council until April 2006.  John has a particular interest in creativity, the impact of the arts in education and inclusion.  He was appointed to the Scottish Arts Council in 2002 and served on the Audit and Creative Arts Committees.

Rab Noakes

Rab Noakes

Rab Noakes is a highly-regarded performer, songwriter and recording artist.  He is also professionally involved in media production. He was Head of Entertainment at BBC Radio Scotland from 1989 to 1995.

He now runs Neon, a successful broadcast media & music production company, with his wife, Stephanie Pordage.

He was appointed to the Scottish Arts Council in March 2005 and has recently been re-elected to the Executive Committee of the Musicians’ Union.  He takes an active part in the Scottish Parliament’s Cross Party group on Contemporary Music.

Ben Twist

Ben Twist

Ben Twist is a freelance theatre director and producer and consultant. He was Artistic Director of Contact Theatre, Manchester and Associate Director of the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh. He has directed theatre, music theatre and opera productions in Scotland, England, Europe, Latin and North America and New Zealand.


Ben is a board member of Prime Productions and Hebrides Ensemble and a trustee of The Theatres Trust.  He joined the Capital Committee of the Scottish Arts Council in 1999.  In 2003 he became Chair of the Capital (now Lottery) Committee.
