Introduction

Eskimo is the launch exhibition of the Gallery at Eskmills in Musselburgh.

Returning to the Edinburgh Art Festival after last year's critically-acclaimed inaugural shows, You Do Voodoo and No More Stars is Polarcap with Eskimo.

I am still here and so are you. Liz Adamson, 2008

It is the first of an annual programme of art, music, drama and dance to use the beautiful outdoor and indoor space at Eskmills, a formerly Victorian Mill, creating a new environment for the visual and performing arts, outside the traditional circuit of galleries.

Polarcap's initial response to the gallery identified 14 artists they felt would be suited to this space and whose work, in its originality and quality, reflects the nature of the venue with its history of innovation and vision.

Eskimo installation shot, Michael Windle Eskmills, formerly a Victorian mill manufacturing fishing nets, now stands as a renovated and contemporary centre for business.

The 14 artists, ranging from the emerging to the internationally-recognised, are:

  • Graham Fagen (Scotland)

Based in Dunbar, Polarcap aims to promote and focus an energy in East Lothian by curating original art events and exhibitions, encouraging out-of-city activity and drawing attention to the local area.

Polarcap

Polarcap aims to make connections and contexts for artists working in different media and at different stages in their careers, providing a platform for artistic discussion, creative exchange and critical debate.

Polarcap ensures the artistic quality of the artists with a hands-on approach to the conception and realisation of Eskimo.

Polarcap will give public talks to secondary school students and art college undergraduates as well as hosting workshops for primary schoolchildren.

Polarcap and Eskmills gratefully acknowledge the support and shared vision of East Lothian Council in the realisation of Eskimo.
