National Review of Live Art

Scotland's International Festival of Live Arts will begin with The National Review of Live Art (NRLA). After the past few years of sell-out successes at the Arches we are thrilled that Tramway will host this year’s NRLA.  This will allow more people than ever before to experience the longest running festival of live art in Europe (26 yrs). This five day programme of innovative and often breath-taking work provides an unrivalled opportunity for audiences to engage with a host of emerging artists and established practitioners from both home and abroad.

Artists French Mottershead and Richard Dedomenici; Photo: Manning Photography We are also delighted to announce that London-based live art duo FrenchMottershead and one man subversive think tank Richard Dedomenici will be artists-in-residence throughout the NRLA.

Responding to unconventional sites across the UK and beyond, FrenchMottershead are committed to encouraging local participation through performance, mixed media and education work, to ask questions about our day-to-day perceptions of the world that envelops us.

Dedomenici’s catalogue of work is impressive in its size and consistently funny in its content, comparisons have been drawn to both Dave Gorman and Mark Thomas. His lateral thinking and his ability to subvert can be utterly pointless but also completely captivating, leading him to be often cited as one of the most creative artists of the moment.  Their role will be vital in helping to bed down the NRLA in its new home.

Along with 18 young Elevator artists, 4 commissioned artists, 30 invited artists, a comprehensive film and video programme including Captured - curated by Lei Cox and Pernille Spence, the NRLA will also welcome 13 women artists from various parts of Asia who will be engaged in a programme called Mapping The Body.  From sexuality to notions of beauty, to art, culture and body as commodity, gender bending and the body in flux, these are testimonies of creativity that raise questions and provide answers if you wish to unearth them.

Nikki Milican, Artistic Director, had this to say:

'In its 26th year the NRLA continues to evolve, provoke and enthuse and as much as the Arches has been a great home for it since 1994, we are delighted to be moving to a bigger venue to meet the growing demand.

Tramway remains one of Europe’s most exciting venues for contemporary work and has always been important to us because of the flexibility, scale and character of its spaces.  The main stage work in 06 will have a very different aesthetic and atmosphere from what we did last year, with premieres from some very stimulating and inventive artists.''

Steve Slater, Senior Producer, Tramway adds:

'If ever a place was destined to hold the National Review of Live Art, Then Tramway is it. A long time ago, when the NRLA resided at the much missed Third Eye Centre on Sauchiehall Street. The festival grew and found form in a way that was truly organic, revolutionising and defining the building itself.

My experience of NRLA during those early years still has a direct impact on my programme and how it manifests itself here at Tramway. It is no accident that conspires to bring this wonderful expression of difference, this challenging festival of ideas south of the river.

The links in this chain of events are people and dreams - flesh and blood, bricks and mortar, time and space. All connect and flow through one another. It may sound strange but - all life is here – so let’s celebrate the NRLA’s home coming – to Tramway.'

Day ticket £10 (£8) per day can be booked by calling Tramway on 0845 330 3501
