Gi - Glasgow International, 11 - 27 April 2008

Glasgow international - the Gi Festival - is the city of Glasgow’s curated and commissioning Festival of Contemporary Visual Art.

The Festival aims to provide a platform for the best of contemporary visual arts, including newly commissioned work by respected and established artists as well as fresh work by emerging talent, shown in grassroots spaces across the city for the first time.

Gi hosts exhibitions, seminars, artists’ talks and events that have been specifically developed for the Festival, in addition to further collaborations throughout the city that reflect Glasgow’s capacity to exhibit internationally significant art.

Gi is THE event in the Scottish cultural calendar for attracting major international collectors and curators to Scotland and has proved to have the cache to be able to attract significant artists to participate in the festival and underline why Glasgow’s contemporary art scene is recognised globally as one of the most exciting today.

Wilhelm Sasnal - "1977"

Under the curatorship of Francis McKee, 2008 sees Gi Festival evolve into its new biennial format.

"In April 2008 there will be a series of major new commissions in key venues across the city, beginning with HIGH WIRE, Catherine Yass' spectacular project at Red Road flats, North Glasgow.

Gi has always extended beyond the established art spaces in the city to inhabit derelict or renovated lesser known sites. In 2008 this will continue as the festival spreads even further across Glasgow. Appropriately, the theme of the third Gi will centre on ideas of public and private – examining the changing nature of public space, the evolving landscape of public and private art funding and the fluid boundaries of privacy in a world of converging mobile technologies.

Jim Lambie - "???"

Since it’s inception, Glasgow international has been founded on the work of the many artist’s run initiatives, small galleries and motivated individuals who fuel the city’s art scene as much as the larger, more official infrastructure.

Grier Edmunson - Jan 26 2006

The programme in 2008 will continue this policy with an increased investment in these spaces and in individual proposals. Alongside this growing platform there will be five large scale projects presenting newly commissioned work by international artists."

Francis McKee, 2007
