Edinburgh Art Festival 2006
The renowned Art Festival is back. Running from the 27 July- 3 September, Edinburgh Art Festival will be bringing together the individual strengths of the city’s visual arts organizations to create a critical mass of activity within a festival framework. By bringing together an international season of visual arts for a wide public, the festival achieves a higher visibility for the participating arts organisations and artists, creating a stronger context for their work.
Beyond the Palace Walls at the Royal Museum exhibits over 170 amazing works of Islamic art dating from the eighth to the nineteenth centuries, all taken from the walls of the winter palace in St Petersburg, and many of which have never been seen before outside Russia.
- Paintings by Italian artist Canaletto at the Queen’s Gallery.
- An extraordinary exhibition of paintings by one of art’s great, but unsung heroes – Alan Elsheimer – at the National Gallery of Scotland.
- Laura Ford’s child-like suits of armour at the RSA on the Mound.
- Celebrated impressionist Vincent Van Gogh at the city’s Dean Gallery.
- The largest exhibition of rare lithographic prints to date (around 130 prints) exploring the history of French posters from the early 19th century Romantic period through to Art Nouveau at the City Art Centre. This exhibition includes fifteen of the most famous works by Toulouse-Lautrec, including the large poster La Goulue, which he designed in 1891 for the Moulin Rouge.
- Twentieth century American photographer Robert Mapplethorpe at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art
- Australian born sculptor and former special effects artist Ron Mueck, best known for Dead Dad – a haunting sculpture of the corpse of his father – at the Royal Scottish Academy Building
- Robert Ryman’s white paintings in the naturally lit gallery at Inverleith House on display for the first time in Scotland.
Recognised up and coming artists exhibiting new work include:
Moyna Flannigan at doggerfisher, whose new portraits are a mix of fantasy with an undertow of both slapstick and social commentary
This year’s ‘Beck’s Futures’ winner Matt Stokes at the Collective, with a newly commissioned piece relating to Edinburgh’s music scenes and subcultures (Stokes is also performing a unique off-site pipe organ recital of experimental transcriptions of underground music in one of Edinburgh’s greatest landmarks St Giles’ Cathedral on the Royal Mile)
American artist Lauren Kirkman’s cobbled street installation piece at the Corn Exchange Gallery
Dutch artist Marijke van Warmerdam’s at the Fruitmarket Gallery showing newly commissioned video work.
Major group exhibitions include seven artists’ work using traditional Japanese woodblock techniques at Patriothall at WASPS and over twenty internationally recognized artists exhibiting at The Talbot Rice Gallery.
Some of the Scottish artists taking part include:
- Painter Andrew Mackenzie at the Amber Roome Gallery;
- David Batchelor at the Ingleby Gallery will be exhibiting two large-scale light chandeliers off-site at a dramatic setting in Edinburgh;
- Glasgow-based artist David Shrigley at Edinburgh Printmakers;
- Barbara Rae at the Scottish Gallery.
- E m e r g e D have commissioned young Scottish artist Scott Laverie to create a pavilion in which to host a four week creative programme of sound art, temporary installations and sculpture by up-and-coming local artists.
