Dussehra 2003

Known as the festival of warriors, Dussehra is a widely observed and extremely popular Hindu event. The Indian Cultural and Festival Committee worked with Glasgow Sculpture Studios to produce the exciting events.

The festival celebrates the story of the Ramayana, the victory of Lord Rama, who represents the force of good, over Ravana the ten headed demon King of Lanka representing the force of evil.

The event culminates in the dramatic burning of Ravana who is stuffed with fireworks, lit by an archer, who represents Rama firing an arrow into Ravan’s navel.

Education

Glasgow Sculpture Studios also worked on an education project based on the Festival. Glasgow Sculpture Studios artists tutored a number of young people from different schools around Glasgow.

The project involved drawing, printing and three dimensional constructions to create lanterns for the Dussehra Parade.
