One of the most startling developments in art during the 20th century came from the recognition of the honesty and innocence to be found in the undirected art of small children.

Lauren Gunn aged three years

'Artists like Miro, Kandinsky and Klee strove to recapture the fluidity and directness of expression of childhood. Henri Matisse – arguably one of the greatest artists of his century – was adamant that to be a great artist one has to be like a child.' Flora Strachan

It is in this spirit that An Tuireann presented an exhibition of work by the under-fives, 'The Kids Open'

From all over Skye and Lochalsh, kids under five have been drawing dragons, dinosaurs, the Italian job car chase, maps, tractors, their dreams, see the chicken kicking a ball…..their imagination is unbound.

A lady holding a giant millipede; Photo: An Tuireann ‘Under 5’ aims to celebrate the creativity and freedom that every young kid has. It aims to show that children possess a natural instinct to use colour, paint and have an ability to create a quality of line that few adults could. It is also to observe what influence the structure of playgroup has, at this early stage on a child's artistic development.
Ross McKenzie aged 3 years

The exhibition was hung at a height which suited small people, but even adults with creaky knees found it rewarding to get down to floor level to view the exhibits. Launched on the opening day and until 16 April every visitor was invited to add to the 12 metre long floor drawing.
