Visual Arts awards available 

Visual Arts Awards: Edinburgh
In order to advance the City of Edinburgh Council Cultural Policy, the Scottish Arts Council and the City of Edinburgh Culture and Sport Unit established a scheme of funding that addresses current gaps in resources available to individual artists.  Formerly known as the Edinburgh Visual Arts and Crafts Award Scheme (EVAAC), the Visual Arts Awards: Edinburgh scheme offers awards to individual artists living and/or working in Edinburgh towards costs in developing new work. Awards up to a maximum value of £1,000 are available.
Deadline for applications: Thursday 3 September 2009

Dundee Visual Artists Award Scheme
Dundee Visual Artists Award Scheme awards offer visual artists research and development grants of up to £1000.  The awards are open to Dundee-based artists working in any visual media. You must be able to demonstrate a commitment to your work and to advancing your skills base and ideas.

Royal Scottish Academy Awards: 

RSA Barns-Graham Travel Award
Deadline: Tuesday 30 June 2009

This award of £2,000 should be used to fund travel and is open to 2009 graduates of the Fine Art Departments of the Scottish Art Schools.  Also open to students who are currently studying at post-graduate level.

RSA Residencies for Scotland
Application deadline: Tuesday 1 September 2009

The Royal Scottish Academy of Art & Architecture (RSA) is delighted to announce the launch of its RSA Residencies for Scotland programme in collaboration with the Scottish Arts Council. With a total budget of some £45,000, the new scheme will provide funded residency opportunities with partner provider venues across Scotland enabling contemporary artists a period of research.  The Residencies will be available for periods of one week to up to six months, with monetary awards of up £5,000, and will be open to artists who are currently living and working in Scotland or are Scottish by birth and are no longer be in full-time education.  Application guidelines and a full list of participating venues are available on the Scholarship & Awards section of the RSA website

Tayside Healthcare Arts Trust
Tayside Healthcare Arts Trust works within the arts and healthcare environment.  Their work ranges from commissions for new landmark buildings and health centres, to a new opportunity funded integrated arts programme for stroke sufferers both within rehabilitation settings and communities.  They would like to hear from visual and applied artists who are interested in working within an arts and healthcare environment and would like to be considered for future developments within Tayside and possibly outwith.  Previous experience is not essential but useful.

Clyde Gateway: 2 x Artist Commission Opportunities

Commission 1: Permanent Public Art Commission
Deadline for Applications: Friday 17 July 2009
A challenging and highly visible gable end on Victoria Street, Rutherglen has been identified, as a key site to 'animate' and 'identify' the area by a new permanent artwork that creates a visual impact.  Up to three artists will be short listed to develop costed design proposals (a full brief and site visit will be arranged for the shortlisted artists). This is a £35,000 commission (inclusive of artist fee and materials).  Commission must be complete by November 2009.
Please send a current CV, artist statement, 10 images of recent work (Jpeg or Tiff format) and covering letter outlining why you are interested in this commission.  'Application Reference: Permanent Public Art Commission' should be clearly marked on your covering letter.

Commission 2: Artist(s) - Art Education Programme for young people at Burgh Primary School
Deadline for Applications: Friday 17 July 2009
An artist (or artists) is sought to develop and implement a programme of innovative art projects for young people (P4/5 composite class of 25) from Burgh Primary School, Rutherglen. The art programme duration will be three weeks and thus the artist(s) should be available to start the project from September 2009.  Artist(s) fee is £1,500.  A budget for materials will be provided in addition to this. 
Expressions of interest are sought from both emerging and established artists.  Please send a current CV, artist statement, 10 images of recent work (Jpeg or Tiff format) and covering letter outlining why you are interested in this commission.  'Application Reference: Education Programme, Burgh Primary' should be clearly marked on your covering letter.

Inverleith House seeks Gallery Assistants (voluntary)
Several opportunities for work experience as gallery assistants have arisen at Inverleith House, in the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh during the forthcoming exhibition of sculpture and drawings by John McCracken. Working as part of a small, experienced team, you will assist with invigilation, actively provide information to the public to help them engage with contemporary art, assist with front-of-house operations, exhibition research and the marketing and promotion of exhibitions. You will have excellent communication and organisational skills and a passionate interest in contemporary art and culture. Whilst these posts are currently unpaid, they offer wide-ranging experience highly relevant to a career in the visual arts.  Minimum 1 day per week commitment, to commence 6 August 2009 (during the Edinburgh Art Festival).

Inspire MA Curating Contemporary Art (Royal College of Art)
From October 2009, the Royal College of Art's Curating Contemporary Art Department will offer a new MA for aspiring curators from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds. This development of Arts Council England's Inspire initiative will offer a vocational and academic curriculum with a professional placement in a museum or gallery over two years. Inspire at the RCA will provide a unique course of postgraduate study for those aiming to train as curators of contemporary art.  A bursary of £12,000-£15,000 p.a. will be paid for each two-year studentship

Invitation to Tender: Creative Lead for the Delhi 2010 - Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Flag Handover Ceremony
Glasgow 2014 has launched a search to find the best creative talent to deliver a breathtaking vision of both city and nation at the Closing Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in 2010 in Delhi.  On Thursday 14 October 2010 hundreds of millions of television viewers around the world, will be treated to an introduction to Glasgow and Scotland through a feast of creativity and talent as the city formally receives the Commonwealth Games flag from India.  Glasgow 2014 has launched the search for the Creative Lead who will propose the concept, which will inspire those watching events in Delhi in 2010.  The Creative Lead will have knowledge and experience of delivering arts, cultural and creative programmes in the UK and internationally. The entire copyright of the creative concept will be assigned to Glasgow 2014 Ltd.

Call for Proposals: Wasps Artists Studios – Hanson Street Project Space
Wasps Artists’ Studios are now welcoming proposals from individuals and groups to exhibit in the Hanson Street project space in Dennistoun, east of Glasgow City Centre. The project space itself is 4,000 sq ft of exhibition space that you encounter on entering the studio building. As the building also houses 77 studio spaces, two open access workshops, the Wasps head office and a café, your work has the potential to reach different kinds of audiences.  Wasps will charge a fee for hire of the space and this money will go directly back into the maintenance and marketing of the space.

Public Art Commissions at Robert Burns Birthplace Museum
Proposals are invited to design, fabricate and install a series of public art commissions at Robert Burns’s birthplace in Alloway. The commissions, ranging from small interior interventions to larger public artworks, will form an important new addition to this iconic site.  Nine separate installations are being commissioned and the artists for each will be selected through open competition. Artists may submit proposals for one or more commissions; however appointments will be made on an installation-by-installation basis, so each proposal will be treated individually (and any costs quoted should reflect this). The competition is open to all artists, sculptors and makers. Selection of the commissioned works will be based on artistic merit, creative compatibility with the overall site development, environmental impact, sustainability and cost. Artists’ experience and demonstrable capacity to deliver a suitable work will also be taken into account.  Proposals should include budget costs and an outline treatment.

Call for proposals: Open Doors Day exhibition at Govanhill Baths
The Govanhill Baths is opening its doors for the second time since the Baths was closed in 2001. The building will be open on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th of September for the public to see the Baths in its current state and find out about plans for its future redevelopment. The Govanhill Baths Art and Regeneration Team would like to invite people to propose ideas for artwork to be sited in the space for the weekend. They would like the work to be relevant to the space, its architecture, social history or the campaign to save it. There are lots of different spaces in the building, including three pools, individual baths, the old steamie (laundry) area, changing areas, reception.

Call for Artist Films: 4th Gstaadfilm Festival
Festival Dates: 12 - 13 March 2010
Call for entries for the fourth Gstaadfilm Festival to take place in the town of Gstaad in Switzerland.  The jury will select 20 – 25 films for entry into the festival, of which five will be prize winners and the makers will be invited to Switzerland for the festival.  There is prize money of SFr 3000 and the overall winner will receive the Golden Cow Award.  This festival accepts films from artists only.

Ricefield Arts and Cultural Centre Residency
Residency Dates: 21 September – 18 December 2009
Ricefield Arts and Cultural Centre invites applications for a three month residency in Glasgow for visual artists of Chinese descent. Supported by the Scottish Arts Council, the residency provides an opportunity for the selected artist to focus on the development and experimentation of their own practice and ideas, and to create new work.

Aesthetica Magazine is currently seeking entries to the 2009 Aesthetica Creative Works Competition.   All finalists will be published in the Aesthetica Creative Works Annual, in stores December 2009.  Three winners will be awarded £500 each.
Entry fee is £10 - this allows you to submit up to 5 images, 5 poems or 2 short stories

Wasps Artists’ Studios: Life - Work Facility at the Steeple, Newburgh, Fife
The Steeple is a new arts facility in Newburgh, in the north of Fife, Scotland. The building was formerly Newburgh town hall and has been restored providing six studio spaces, a project/exhibition space and a visiting artists flat and studio.  The visiting artist accommodation and studio are now available for hire and Wasps would consider all applications that last between one and three months. This would be a perfect opportunity for someone wishing to develop and devote time to their practice in a new environment.

Artist Flat Available for Artist Residencies – Timespan in Helmsdale
Timespan’s newly converted flat in the old fishing village of Helmsdale, Sutherland is available for artists to work or relax.  It has an open plan living - working - kitchen area; view over garden and river; all mod cons are included and it is fully accessible. The flat is adjacent to Timespan museum and contemporary art gallery.  Timespan’s complex includes a museum and archive available for local/genealogy research; gallery and shop selling contemporary art and crafts, café, garden, IT suite and a large wet workshop. Special rates are offered for artists.

PAR+RS: Public Art Resource+Research Scotland
The Public Art Resource+Research Scotland (PAR+RS) is a new initiative being developed by the Scottish Arts Council that aims to promote excellence and innovation within public art, by building the capacity, knowledge and expertise of people working in public art across Scotland. PAR+RS will form a central part of a wider strategy for public art currently under development within the Scottish Arts Council. Art in Healthcare volunteer opportunities
Art in Healthcare (formerly Paintings in Hospitals Scotland) is a forward-looking arts-in-health organisation working with healthcare communities to create opportunities for patients, visitors and staff to enjoy and engage with the visual arts.
The organisation is looking to recruit volunteers to be involved with its work around Scotland. AiH would like to hear from people who are passionate about visual art, interested in improving their local hospitals and looking for an enjoyable volunteering experience.

Artistri Launch
Recent graduate artists from Scottish Art Schools have been given a new platform on which to promote their work with the launch of artistri online gallery.
Never before has it been possible to view the work of artists from the four main art schools in Scotland: Edinburgh College of Art; Glasgow School of Art; Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design; and Gray’s Art School in the same online exhibition. More than 240 works representing over 20 artists at the forefront of Scottish contemporary art are exhibited online.
