South by Southwest 2007
14 - 18 March 2007 Austin, Texas
SXSW Scotland at SXSW 2007
South By Southwest (SXSW), the annual music, film and interactive industry conference, takes place from 9-18 March in Austin, Texas. The conference is one of the largest international music industry networking events in the world, with coveted showcasing opportunities for bands.

A trade fair runs throughout the days, allowing delegates to network with international label, agency and radio representatives. The conference itself offers workshops and panel discussions. This year panels feature such discussion themes as What Do We Want From Life? (reinventing ones career to adapt to the changing music industry) and Say It Out Loud, I’m What? And I’m Proud (race and ethnic identity in the industry). |
Last year, more than 1,400 acts representing a huge cross-section of genres showcased before over 8,000 delegates from around the world. This year’s showcase looks to be just as big, with over 50 stages for showcasing bands throughout the SXSW nights.

16 Scottish bands have been invited by SXSW to showcase this year, with the following receiving support from the Scottish Arts Council to attend an event that will allow them to promote themselves internationally. |

The Road to SXSW, a collaboration between the Scottish Arts Council, BBC Radio Scotland and DF Concerts, featured two gigs in Glasgow’s King Tut’s and Dundee’s Reading Rooms in the run-up to the bands’ departure for Austin. Performances will be broadcast on BBC Radio Scotland’s Vic Galloway Show on 12 March. |
Ian Smith, Head of Music at the Scottish Arts Council said: ‘The roster of bands invited to SXSW from Scotland demonstrates that our investment, both in burgeoning talent and in supporting the careers of already established bands is producing hugely significant results. Last year, Paolo Nutini and The Fratellis were almost unknown and now they are in the Top 10 UK album charts ... and will be returning to SXSW to perform at our dedicated showcase this year.'
