Dutch cellist Quirine Viersen joined the ensemble for Elgar’s Cello Concerto. She belongs to the internationally leading musical personalities of the younger generation. |
The conductor for the course was Takuo Yuasa who is renowned for his work with young musicians. He returned to work with The National Youth Orchestra of Scotland after the successful NYOS New Year concerts in 2004. He conducted the orchestra performing works by two of Russia’s greatest composers, Glinka and Shostakovich.
After a week of intense rehearsals The National Youth Orchestra of Scotland opened its Summer Tour on 5 August 2005 at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. A second concert was given at the Symphony Hall in Birmingham, before the young musicians travelled abroad. In Amsterdam’s exquisite Concertgebouw, where NYOS had performed already in 2002, the orchestra played to a full house.

In Berlin, NYOS performed as part of the Young-Euro-Classic-Festival at the Konzerthaus, one of the finest music halls in the world. The concert featured the world premiere of Wound Up by Anna Meredith, who is from Edinburgh originally and was recently appointed Composer in Residence with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
The concert was followed by a reception in the Embassy's Wintergarten, where the talented young musicians celebrated the last stop of their successful Summer Tour. |

A speech by the British Ambassador Sir Peter Torry in which he praised the musicians, was followed by a lively performance of traditional Scottish music and dance.
August was not only a very exciting month for The National Youth Orchestra of Scotland, but also for The National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland (NYJOS) and Camerata Scotland.
NYJOS, conducted by Swedish Jazz musician and composer Bertil Fält, took part in the Edinburgh International Jazz and Blues Festival. They then went on to perform at The Sage in Gateshead, The Brickyard in Carlisle and the Tolbooth in Stirling. The concerts, that featured favourite big band tunes as well as a variety of Swedish jazz music, were all sold out and enthusiastically received.
