Free Assessments - Academy of Music & Sound

This is a great opportunity for potential students to work with a music tutor to determine where they are in terms of their playing and performance ability and more importantly, where they want to be.

You will be asked to perform a selection of technical exercises and some of your favourite material. After the assessment you can have a chat with the Centre Manager about the courses and take the opportunities to visit the Academy.

Musicians Auditions - Only the Brave

The producers of the thrilling new musical Only The Brave are holding auditions for orchestral musicians.

Only the Brave is an original epic new musical, with a cast and orchestra of over 35 artists, and starring Keith Jack and Niamh Perry. The Musical will have its world premiere at Musicals at George Square, during the 2008 Festival Fringe.

For your chance to be involved in this exhiting new work of musical theatre, please register for an audition on Sunday 22 June by emailing Only the Brave.

Jazz Summer School 2008

The 3rd Jazz Glasgow Summer School takes place from Friday 27 June to Tuesday 1 July, utilising the state of art education facilities at Glasgow's City Halls.

This five-day course will include classes in ensemble playing, ear training and theory and you can enjoy workshops led by some of Scotland's most experienced professional jazz musicians and educators.

The course is open to all instrumentalists, you should be around Grade 5 or above on your chosen instrument and you will be placed in classes that will best reflect your abilities.

Rock Club

The Academy of Music and Sound offers an opportunity for young musicians (aged 10-16) to develop their musical abilities and also the chance to play as part of a band. The Rock Club will run over the course of a week, from 21 to 25 July 2008. The course will culminate in a live performance on Friday wich parents are welcome to attend.

27th International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition Vienna

Like no other contest of the same kind, the International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition offers young talents an opportunity of making contact with representatives of the international operatic scene, thus paving the way for an international career. After all, the very special feature of this competition is the composition of its jury - the people who decide about the maturity and skills of the young candidates are exclusively the experts who will in practise be responsible for hiring them.

European Song Contest to be held in Scotland

The first ever West European Minority Languages Song Competition is to take place in Scotland.

The event will take place next year in the Highland capital of Inverness at Eden Court Theatre on 21 June 2008 and will be the first of four regional finals taking place across Europe. The winner of the competition will be entered into the final of the pan-European Liet Lavlut competition that takes place in Sweden next October.

Barbirolli International Oboe Festival and Competition - Isle of Man

The next Babirolli Oboe Festival & Competition will be held from Saturday 28 March to Saturday 4 April 2009.

Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO) Board nominates Brian Lang as next Chair

Brian Lang has been nominated by the RSNO's Board of Directors as the next chair of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. His appointment is subject to approval by the RSNO Society at its Annual General Meeting on Friday 22 August.

Brian Lang has been Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of St Andrews since January 2001, he will suceed Tom Thomson, RSNO Chair from 2001, who has guided Scotland's national orchestra through one of the most sucessful periods in the organisation's recent history.

SNAP Rhythm & Rhyme

SNAP Rhythm and Rhyme is part of Scottish Refugee Week 08 events, it's a collaboration between Paragon, poets from ConFAB and visual artists form Street Level for an evening of rhymes and rhythm. Paragon's Kaleidophone Ensemble and visuals form the Multi-story project in Red Road Flats present unique multidisciplinary art event exploring human rights and asylum issues, dispelling fears, supporting individuality and celebrating community.

The event will take place 20 and 21 June 2008 at 7.30pm, at the Tron, Changing House, 63 Trongate Glasgow, G1 5HB.

SAA-UK Community Music Summer School 2008

Since 1997 SAA-UK (South Asian Arts) have brought together internationally renowned musicians and music lovers from Leeds and all around the world to spend a week together learning or developing their music making skills in a professional and relaxed atmosphere.

BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award

Are you aged between 15-20? Do you perform folk, roots or acoustic music from any culture?

BBC Radio 2's Mike Harding Show is searching for talented young performers for the eleventh Young Folk Award. This competition is open to soloists, duos and groups, the prize includes gigs at top UK Festivals, a BBC radio session an more!

National Instrumental Conference 2008

On 30 September 2008 HITS (Heads of Instrumental Teaching Scotland), in partnership with RSAMD, will host a conference for instrumental teachers in Glasgow.  The conference will be structured around masterclasses and workshops, and guest speakers include trumpet soloist and RSAMD Principal John Wallace.

Kodály Training Weekend 2008

The National Youth Choir of Scotland (NYCoS)'s Kodály Training Weekend will take place on 6 and 7 September at Stirling University. The course offers a wide selection of workshops to choose from - there really is something for everyone interested in music education in general, and musicianship based on Kodály principles in particular. One of the exciting workshops on offer this year is Kodály and the Curriculum for Excellence, where Lucinda Geoghegan will show how to link the relative concepts.
