The Awards and the Winners

Hands Up for Trad, in association with BBC Scotland Interactive, hosted the third ‘Scots Trad Music Awards’ Celebrations on 3 December 2005 in Edinburgh's Queen's Hall. The aim of these Awards is to highlight Scotland's wonderful traditional music in all its forms and to create a high profile opportunity which will bring the music and music industry into the media and public spotlight.

The Awards, which give recognition to excellence within Scotland's thriving musical culture, encompass all aspects of traditional music, including: 

  • Gaelic and Scots song
  • Folk music
  • Scottish Dance music
  • Pipe Bands
  • and much more...

Performers

The 2005 Awards ceremony and concert included performances by:

  • Blazin' Fiddles (Live Act of the Year 2004)
  • Maggie MacInnes Band (Gaelic Singer of the Year 2004)
  • Jim Malcolm (Songwriter of the Year 2004)
  • Plockton National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music
  • Kirkwall City Pipe Band (Scottish Pipe Band of the Year 2004)
  • Stuart Cassells (BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2005)
  • TMSA Young Trad Musicians (featuring all the finalists of the 2005 BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician Award)
  • Anna Massie Band (BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2003)
  • The Occasionals

The comperes this year were BBC Scotland's Mary Ann Kennedy and Iain Anderson. 

The Awards and the Winners

Piper, Trad Music Awards 2003; Photo: Graham Clark The Awards are divided into 18 categories (16 of which are decided by public vote) each with four nominations.  Voting closed on 25 November, with more than 60,000 votes cast by the public.  This year, the Scottish Arts Council is sponsoring a new award, for services to the industry. 

Also for the first time, six performers were inducted into the Scots Traditional Music Hall of Fame.  Each entrant has to have been performing for over 20 years.  The inaugural entrants consist of five Scottish musicians and one international performer.

Gaelic Singer of the Year (sponsored by Macmeanmna) Julie Fowlis
Instrumentalist of the Year (sponsored by Temple Records) Aaron Jones
Live Act of the Year (sponsored by Royal Scottish Country Dance Society) Peatbog Faeries
Media Award (sponsored by Greentrax) Aig Cridhe Ar Ciuil (At the Heart of our Music is Song)
Scots Singer of the Year (sponsored by Traditional Music and Song Association) Jim Reid
