Distil 2006
20 October 2006
Background and context Showcase
The first Distil New Music Showcase takes place in Stirling on 20 October.
| Distil is a residential retreat for musicians who work extensively in the fields of traditional and folk music. The first course was held in October 2002, and has become a twice-yearly event in Scotland, and has since been extended to England. |

Founders Simon Thoumire and David Francis recognised the need for adventurous musicians from the traditional music community to collaborate with musicians working in other styles, and set up the course to allow them to spend time working with others and reflecting on their work, guided throughout the process by mentors.

The four-day retreats took place in New Lanark and involved both one-to-one sessions and plenaries. Participants brought along anything from basic ideas to completed works. |
For the first time in its four-year history, Distil will present a showcase of new music. Traditional musicians who have attended Distil courses in the past were invited to give the project's organisers ideas for short pieces, and seven of those who submitted ideas were selected. The result is an octet composed by:
The work will be performed by Mattie Foulds (percussion), Mairi Campbell and Sarah Wilson (fiddles), Dick Lee (clarinets), Dave Milligan (piano), Fiona Young (accordion), Christine Hanson (cello) and Iain MacInnes (pipes).
The showcase will take place at the Tolbooth in Stirling at 7.30 pm on Friday 20 October.
