Chamber Music Forum
Background and context Chamber Music Forum
The Chamber Music Forum is about to become a constituted organisation, thanks to the Scottish Arts Council.

One of the priorities of The Scottish Arts Council’s Music Department is the development of sector forums to represent the interests of particular genres of music. The Traditional Music Forum and the Scottish Jazz Federation were the first two such networks to be established. The Scottish Music Industry Association, which represents contemporary rock and pop music, was incorporated in March 2008 and is in the process of electing Board members. |
The Chamber Music Forum represents the interests of Scotland’s groups and ensembles – both instrumental and vocal – such as the Scottish Ensemble, Cappella Nova, Edinburgh Quartet, Mr McFall’s Chamber, Hebrides Ensemble, Paragon Ensemble, Scottish Flute Trio and the Dunedin Consort. Promoters of chamber music, such as Enterprise Music Scotland, ecat and the Queen’s Hall, as well as festivals like East Neuk, Music at Paxton and St Magnus, are also represented.
| A recent report by James Waters and Helen Jamieson, which consulted the chamber music sector, made recommendations which will now be implemented. The Forum will work to develop audiences for chamber music and raise the profile of performers, promoting growth in Scottish Chamber Music in Scotland, the UK and internationally. |

The sharing of administrative resources, such as IT support, databases and marketing or listings, is key to this work and a dedicated administrator will soon be recruited to act as a central coordination point. A small Executive Committee will support the administrator and take a strategic view of the sector. The Forum will have an annual 'away day' to allow the membership of the group to share information and be brought up to date with developments in the sector, as well as electing the Executive Committee.

The writers of the report agreed that the best advocacy for the chamber music sector was for it to work together and create a critical mass of activity which will confirm its importance to the musical life of Scotland. |
The Chamber Music Forum will take the lead in representing and consolidating this sector, which presents some of the highest quality music and musicians from Scotland.
