Kris Drever starts the year with appearances at Showcase Scotland and Celtic Connections.

Biography

Kris Drever; Photo: Hugo Morris; Courtesy: Reveal Records Orcadian multi-instrumentalist Kris Drever is one of Scotland’s most exciting up-and-coming artists.  The singer, guitarist, banjo- and double bass-player has been based in Edinburgh since 1995, where he quickly became part of the established pub session and gigging circuits.

One of his early bands, Fine Friday, grew out of Kris’s involvement at the Sandy Bell’s sessions, where he met Nuala Kennedy and Anna-Wendy Stevenson.  Fine Friday recorded two albums (Foot Stompin’ Records) and toured Europe, Canada and Australia, before going their separate ways to work on other projects.

Kris was soon in demand as a gigging and recording session musician, and has worked with the likes of the Battlefield Band, John McCusker, Kate Rusby, Cathie Ryan, Harem Scarem, Clare McLaughlin, Bruce MacGregor, Leo McCann, Daniel Lapp, Tannas, and his father Ivan Drever, former lead vocalist of Celtic rock group Wolfstone.  Kris also toured the USA and Chile with dance show Celtic Fusion.

Recent projects and successes

Kris has also received two nominations for a 2007 BBC Radio 2 Folk Award, to be announced in February: Best Traditional Song and the Horizon Award for New Talent.

In 2005, Kris, Martin Green and Aidan O’Rourke formed Lau.  The trio opened the 2006 Cambridge Folk Festival, and make another appearance at this year’s Celtic Connections.

Other current projects include a duo with Eamonn Coyne, and playing in the John McCusker Band and Session A9.

Kris will be making a number of appearances at this year’s Celtic Connections and Showcase Scotland:

  • with Eamonn Coyne on Sunday 21 January
  • with Lau on Saturday 27 January
  • solo in the New Voices slot on Sunday 28 January
