Edinburgh's Old Town is full of stories.  Explore its closes, wynds and hidden spaces, discover the tales of its famous and infamous residents and find out why it still inspires writers, poets and artists today. Visit Old Town Festival events at venues up and down the Royal Mile to unlock the secrets of this unique area.

The Old Town Festival is a celebration of the history, community and Scottish culture of Edinburgh’s Old Town – a unique place layered with stories. The Festival’s two week programme of storytelling, walking tours, children’s and family events, theatre, film, music literature events, exhibitions, talks and discussions is the perfect opportunity to delve deep into the Old Town’s past, explore its present and help shape its future.

We've highlighted some of the events below.

The Festival offers lots of chances for families to take part, with events from Canongate Youth Project, at Royal Mile Primary School, Scottish Book Trust, the Storytelling Centre and the Museum of Childhood.

Life Stories project

The Storytelling Centre's Life Stories Project was established in 2003 in consultation with a group of storytellers who realised the need for more inclusive arts experiences for older people and their carers. Today the project works with community groups all over Edinburgh and Lothian.
