BRAW - books, reading and writing

BRAW is the new network for Scottish children’s books, and has been set up under the umbrella of the Scottish Book Trust and funded by the Scottish Arts Council.

Its aim is to promote books, reading and writing for young people by authors and illustrators living in Scotland as well as to encourage participation for all children in Scotland.

BRAW has just launched a brand new website which is the only site completely devoted to Scottish Children’s Books.

It provides author and illustrator listings, an online bookclub and a database of over 800 contemporary Scottish children’s books as well as being a valuable source of information on reading and writing initiatives taking place across Scotland.

Area for parents and carers

There is also a section for parents and carers, which provides helpful information, support and advice about reading and writing with a child. Parents can browse the books database, which is categorised by age group and theme and makes searching for books quick and easy. The area for parents and carers also provides useful links to other internet sites giving help and advice on literacy for babies and children of all ages.

Online bookclub

The BRAW bookclub is an online bookclub for children and young people, which each month features a different book by an author or illustrator who resides in Scotland.

There are topics for discussion, the opportunity to win a copy of the book and a chance to ask the author or illustrator questions about the book. Children and young people can even send in a review of the featured book with the possibility of reviews being put up on the website.   Girl reading; Photo: Rebecca Moyce

Also in the section is some help and advice on running your own bookclub.

The BRAW website also features many more areas, including a kids' area in which you can find 'fun stuff', 'sites for young readers and writers', 'illustrator of the month' and a creative writing competition.

BRAW is supported by the National Lottery through the Scottish Arts Council.
