St Andrew’s in the Square Glasgow’s Centre for Scottish Culture
 |
 |
In 2007 works were completed to St Andrews in the Square to improve its capacity to develop its prime purpose as a cultural venue. |
This building is a splendid Category A listed building, thought to be the earliest large scale classical church in Scotland. Built post reformation and dating from 1739 it is modelled on London’s St-Martin-in-the-Fields.
| When the building was originally restored and adapted during 1999 by Glasgow Building Preservation Trust, it was leased to its present occupants the specially created St Andrews in the Square Trust in 2000, who now run the building primarily as a cultural venue celebrating Scottish music, drama and dance. |

To enable the building to support itself, it also acts as a popular Glasgow venue for weddings and conferences.
The most recent improvement works, which were funded jointly by Scottish Arts Council and Scottish Enterprise Glasgow, were targeting increased technical capacity and visibility of the building as a venue and to extend their artistic programme. This programme extends from weekly tuition groups and Ceilidh dance classes to Live at the Star and BBC Radio 3 concerts.
The funding has been spent on:
- creation of additional storage space for technical equipment
- movable stage lighting
- sound equipment
- specialist person lift for accessing lighting and technical equipment
- new venue logo
- banners and sign boards
- creation of new office space for the building management and promotion staff

The project was made possible with the help of an award of £40,588 from the Scottish Arts Council National Lottery Fund and additional support from Scottish Enterprise Glasgow. |
