Developing festivals in Scotland
Most development work relates to new features which enhance existing festivals. However, recent new festivals include:
- Big in Falkirk, which is a two-day weekend festival with street theatre, music, dance, crafts and fireworks
- Discovery, a new festival of children’s film
- The Triptych pop music festival in Glasgow
Investment in festivals
We invest around £3 million in festivals across Scotland. About £1.2 million goes to the major festivals – International, Book, Jazz and Fringe – to reflect the high quality of work shown and the large audience they attract. However, we also support scores of smaller festivals in both urban and rural settings, ranging from £1,000 for the Butelive festival on the Isle of Bute to almost £70,000 for the St Magnus Festival on Orkney, plus festivals run by enthusiastic volunteers, particularly for folk music, storytelling and drama.
