Artfull is a joint national initiative developed by the Scottish Government’s National Programme for Improving Mental Health and Wellbeing and the Scottish Arts Council. Artfull demonstrates and supports the role that arts and creativity play in promoting positive mental health, by facilitating increased access and participation in arts activity and supporting the development of quality artistic practice in the field.
Glasgow is hosting the first Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film festival, in celebration of World Mental Health Day. The festival aims to explore meaning and myth in relation to mental health, our history of asylum and the history of rights, through to current concepts of recovery and well-being. The festival is taking place over two weeks, from 4 - 18 October 2007.
Over 30 events will be held across the city and beyond, including commercial films at the Grosvenor cinema in Glasgow’s west end and at The Vogue, Lanark. Films include A Beautiful Mind and My Name is Joe among others, with themes that include: creativity and mental health; Scottish portrayals of mental health; and inequalities and mental health.
Check out Laff Yer Heid Aff! - stand up comedy with comedians Raymond Mearns, Gary Little, David Kay and Reverend Obadiah Steppenwolf III at The Loft, Ashton Road.
Full programme details can be found by visiting the Scottish Mental Health Arts & Film Festival website.
An exhibition of artworks exploring mental health and wellbeing.
Early in 2007, Project Ability put out a call for submissions of artwork on the theme of mental wellbeing and mental illness. Artists from around the world responded to the call and this exhibition is the result. The selected works will go on display in Project Ability’s two galleries and will be accompanied by a film that documents the run up to the event and introduces some of the artists involved in the exhibition. What makes this particularly exciting is the decision to produce a digital film of the artists work. In addition to making the work available to a wider audience, this film provides an opportunity for artists to share, through spoken word, their insights into their work and their perspectives about mental health through their stories and narratives.
The exhibition runs at Project Ability from 8 October until 23 November.
A week of free performances, workshops, exhibitions and events across Tayside celebrating and demonstrating the creativity, innovation and quality practice of artists, arts practice, and projects across the region. 8 - 14 October 2007. For more information, visit the Plus Perth & Kinross website.
