Symbolic Spaces
Symbolic Spaces is a visual arts project that has engaged pupils across East Ayrshire Council in the exploring and making of contemporary visual arts. This was a creative collaboration between contemporary artists, pupils, staff and local authority departments.
Over the last year visiting artists have been working with pupils and teachers, exploring, making, designing, and enjoying contemporary arts!
| Funded by the Scottish Arts Council Children and Young People fund, the project aimed to raise awareness of contemporary arts in Scotland and increase participation amongst young people in areas often isolated from cultural activity. |

Around 140 children and young people have been working with the artists exploring the spaces around us through 3D animations, sculpture, photography, language and drawing. All projects challenged the participants’ ideas of what contemporary arts could be by working in a range of media and fusing this with new technology.

The Symbolic Spaces exhibition at The Dick Institute, Kilmarnock during the summer raised awareness of the range of contemporary visual art that is practised in Scotland and the potential links this has in the school curriculum.
The project is a central part of the Cultural Co-ordinator programme in East Ayrshire Council and was developed in partnership with the Arts and Museums Section.
