Rhythmic Marimekko - Fashion Design Project

South Lanarkshire Cultural Co-ordinator, Liz Conacher writes about their latest project.

Partnership working in South Lanarkshire enabled the Cultural Co-ordinators to bring together 100 senior secondary pupils to explore fashion design.

Most of the pupils involved had never heard of Marimekko and had never previously set foot in The Lighthouse.

Over a twelve week period pupils met after school in local venues to design and make their own textiles, jewellery and garments, facilitated by professional designers and class teachers. For many pupils these sessions complimented and enhanced their design work in the classroom.

'Really gave me a push in the right direction for jewellery design in Higher Art.'  - Biggar High pupil

Teachers also benefited from the contact with specialists and commented on the practical skills and inspiration they gained.

To celebrate the pupils’ achievements a fashion show was held, providing further opportunities for creativity. A motion graphics group developed stunning backdrops which were projected on to the catwalk throughout the show. The same group of pupils are currently editing documentary footage of the whole project for a DVD.

'I felt very proud to have the opportunity to model my own work.' - Strathaven Academy pupil

Another school involved their DJ group who mixed new music for the show and performed live on the night.

The PR team created publicity for the show, designing tickets, posters and programmes as well as writing an article for the local newspaper.

'We were all pleasantly surprised at what could be achieved – very professional finish.' - SEN Support Worker Rutherglen High

To pull together the various strands of this project, Cultural Co-ordinators worked with a range of local authority staff including teachers from ten schools, Specialist Services, Arts Development Officers and the Determined to Succeed team.

'This kind of project gives qualitative value to the course work in school. It raises self esteem and confidence for every pupil.' - PT Art & Design Sanderson High
