Mischief La-Bas’ – Painful Creatures
In 2003 Mischief La-Bas was the only UK Company to receive a grant from the Pan-European producers group ‘In-situ’ for the international development of outdoor performance. The £75,000 they received went towards developing their ground-breaking project Painful Creatures, also supported by other organisations.

Devised by Artistic Director Ian Smith Painful Creatures consists of a startling ‘walk through the woods’ featuring work by a wide range of arts practitioners that would never normally find themselves in a public situation. Grimy 'Carnies' invite the audience to take the trail through Snake-haired Gorgons, Punctured Saints, Military Checkpoints, Dangling Tree Spirits, Shipwrecked Galleons and pig-eating Robots.
The ‘unfairground’ of Painful Creatures offers many curious attractions: performances, soundtracks, installations, paintings, sculpture, living tableaux, dance, puppetry and a magnificent articulated fire sculpture.

Painful Creatures was performed totally free and accessible to all members of the public at the following events;
- ‘Big in Falkirk’ –1 and 2 May 2004
- Brighton Festival –6 and 7 May 2004
- Bradford International Festival – 18 June 2004
- ‘Vive La Cite’ – Sotteville, France –25 and 26 June 2004
