Profile on: Dominic Hill
New artistic director at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh
Meet Dominic Hill, recently appointed Artistic Director at the Traverse, Scotland’s New Writing Theatre. Dominic will take up the post in early 2008 succeeding current Artistic Director Philip Howard who is standing down after 11 years.
Prior to his appointment at the Traverse, Dominic was co-Artistic Director (with James Brining) at Dundee Rep Theatre, a post he has held since 2003. Before joining Dundee Rep Theatre Dominic worked as a Freelance Director, Associate Director at Orange Tree Theatre, Richmond, Assistant Director at the RSC and Assistant Director at Perth Theatre (1994 – 1996, Regional Theatre Young Director Scheme).
Dominic said, 'I am delighted to have been given this opportunity to lead one of the most exciting theatres in the UK. Philip has achieved an amazing amount in the last 11 years and it is an honour and a challenge to follow in his footsteps. I look forward to working with the staff and the playwriting community in Scotland to take the Traverse onto the next stage of its illustrious career.'
Productions Dominic directed for Dundee Rep Theatre include Happy Days, Hansel and Gretel, Midsummer Night’s Dream, Monkey, The Talented Mr Ripley, Ubu the King, The Graduate, Macbeth, Scenes from an Execution (winner of Best Director and Best Production, Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland), Peter Pan, Twelfth Night, Dancing at Lughnasa, The Snow Queen, The Duchess of Mafia and The Winter’s Tale (nominated for Best Director, Barclays/TMA Awards).
Dominic will direct the following upcoming productions including Peer Gynt – a co-production with Dundee Rep and the National Theatre of Scotland (Sept/Oct 2007), A Prayer for my Daughter by David Babe at the Young Vic (Feb 2008) and Falstaff for Scottish Opera (May 2008).
The Traverse Theatre, based in Edinburgh, considers itself Scotland’s New Writing Theatre. From its conception in 1963, the Traverse’s commissioning process embraces a spirit of innovation and risk-taking that has launched the careers of many of Scotland’s best-known writers including John Byrne, David Greig, David Harrower, Gregory Burke and Liz Lochhead.
Upcoming productions from the Traverse Theatre Company include Rupture, from 22 September - 6 October, and The Pearlfisher, from 26 October - 10 November 2007.
