Focus: Horsecross
Horsecross, which runs both the theatre and concert hall, was unveiled in September 2005 with the opening of Scotland’s newest music and arts venue, Perth Concert Hall.

Horsecross uses both venues to offer music, drama, new media, comedy and family events. In a move to make it easier than ever to experience the arts in Scotland, it wants to ensure the venues are family friendly. With this at the forefront of the business, Horsecross are proud to offer affordable ticket prices including numerous Kids Go Free promotions at selected concerts this festive season. Having a family friendly programme is also fundamental in reaching this audience. Therefore, Horsecross has ‘Santa-sack-loads’ of events for children and families. |
Horsecross evolved out of Perth Theatre as the new agency delivering cultural activities in Perth Concert Hall, Perth Theatre and to all communities across the Perth and Kinross area. Horsecross aims to put this part of Scotland firmly on the cultural map both nationally and internationally.
The idea was to have the new concert hall overseen by an organisation which already has a close and well established connection to the local community. ‘We loved the name and the idea that we were bringing the area back to life with a family friendly identity firmly rooted in the local area’, says Jane Spiers, Chief Executive, Horsecross. ‘It marks the beginning of a new cultural life in the city’.

First up at Perth Theatre is the annual pantomime. This year it is the classic fairytale, Sleeping Beauty, suitable whether you're four, forty or far older.
A fresh take on a traditional story, this is 'a brand new family show with classic panto characters' – heroes, villiains and thigh slapping laughs. 'You are never too old to hiss at the baddies, cheer the hero or shout ‘it’s behind you'.
'Sleeping Beauty' opens on 9 December 2005. |
There’s also an array of family productions at the concert hall. This includes 'A Magic Carpet Christmas Ride' - a mesmerising storytelling session for seven to 12 year olds, and festive concerts from the 'Childline Christmas Concert' to The Singing Kettle’s 'Christmas Magic'.
The pioneering Threshold artspace in the foyer of the concert hall holds a bank of 22 screens, sophisticated sound system and giant projection wall. Threshold adds a whole new dimension to concert-going, not to mention the large space where children can have some interactive fun.

This festive season CosmicSky lands at Threshold. This touring show brings a specially built domed theatre complete with the latest projection technology, surround sound and imagery.
Also at Threshold is 'Players' - an interactive exhibition for children. |
