The Curve Foundation Dance Company

'From small cocoons grow beautiful butterflies'

The Curve Foundation was started in Edinburgh 1998 by a small group of dancers is now the resident dance company at The Brunton Theatre in Musselburgh.

The Curve Foundation had an amazingly successful 2005. The public and critical response was fantastic:  Ellie Carr said their work was 'Beautiful, memorable and strikingly original' and as a partner the support the Brunton has given has been invaluable.

The company has commissioned and created 'Beyond Prejudice' by Jonathan Watkins - a rising star with the Royal Ballet. The company has been challenged both rhythmically and emotionally by this new creation. The world premiere of this work will be in spring 2006.

The Curve Foundation has already created and presented 10 diverse works by seven different international choreographers. The main focus of the company has been self-generation in order to develop a distinct, unique repertory.

Education work

The Curve Foundation has taught workshops throughout East Lothian and Scotland.  With the help of Dawn Hartley and Claire Hughes they have managed to teach over 700 pupils in 24 different workshops at various primary schools throughout the area.  The workshops they design were specifically for P6 & P7 and explored the relationship between Music and Movement looking closely at selected material from the companies repertory.  These workshops were completely practical and often danced to Bach or Vivaldi.

The pupils gained in confidence and understanding of movement to music merely through practice - the to more they tried it, the better they got at it.

Curve Foundation has taught nearly every P6 & P7 pupil in East Lothian and is at present redesigning and refining more workshops for 1 year and 2 year high school pupils relevant to present prepertory for 2006.

'It was fantastic seeing all the pupils completely engaged and enjoying dance'
(Schoolteacher, East Lothian)

'I never realised dancing was so tough, and I never thought I’d dance to music like that (Bach), but by the end I was enjoying it and dancing away no problem!, it was great fun'
(School Pupil, East Lothian)

Spring Season 2006

This beautiful elegant work resonates wonderfully to 20th century music ranging from Tobani to Gabriel Prokoviev to Preveen. The lighting design is by Dave Grierson.

'When disturbed, then disturbed' (1998) is a modern day masterpiece choreographed and danced by Ross cooper, mentored by the bad boy of ballet Michael Clark.
