The Work Room

Introducing the new creative space to encourage growth of independent dance in Glasgow...

The Work Room has been created as part of the Tramway/Scottish Ballet National Lottery funded capital project and is in receipt of project funds

The Work Room is an innovative new venture providing dedicated creative space for dance and support for artistic development and research, including long-term residencies of up to eight weeks in dedicated intensive studio time.

The Work Room functions as a studio resource, a professional network, a provider of long term choreographic residencies, a library resource and a creative hub.

What is The Work Room

The Work Room opened its doors in January 2009 and operates from its brand new, purpose-built studio.

Constructed within Tramway, the Scottish Ballet capital project, the space was designed by Malcolm Fraser architects in consultation with the independent dance community to serve the specific needs of this fertile and multiform strand of dance.

Managed by Creative Co-ordinator Laura Cameron Lewis, The Work Room is an artist-led membership organisation.

A 'Strategic Artist Panel', comprising artists elected from the membership advises the Creative Coordinator in the creation of a range of opportunities to build partnerships and ensure access to the studio by a cross-section of the Glasgow dance community.

The initial programme included residencies with Gilmore Dance Theatre, Anna Krzystek, Stamma Productions and Diane Toll. The Work Room is currently seeking proposals for the next programme of residencies from July 2009.

Creative Coordinator - Laura Cameron Lewis

Laura Cameron Lewis

Laura Cameron Lewis is Creative Co-ordinator at The Work Room, managing this artist-led dance development studio in Scotland.

Laura is something of a renaissance woman.  No plans to build a time machine (yet!), but with a career that blurs the boundaries between traditional roles, she is a firm believer in creating the best tool for the job.

Probably best known for her work as a performance artist with the award-winning Highway Diner group, her public appearances encompass acting, dance, theatre and music. As co-artistic director of Highway Diner she has variously worked as producer, PR, writer, choreographer, dramaturg, devisor and actor.

Since completing her degree in devised theatre at legendary liberal arts institution, Dartington College of Arts, Laura went on to form the Laboratorium-33 Theatre Company. Co-creator of the SiLENCiO arts cabaret with the poet Jennifer Williams, she curated avant thinking in late-night club environments.

Since then, she has worked as a producer with the Communicado theatre company, freelanced as an arts writer, and directed the Groundwork Media Agency - a boutique PR group managing accounts ranging from the Pleasance Press Office to performance and visual arts clients.

When she is not putting her experiences as both artist and producer to good use running The Work Room, she lectures in theatre directing at Queen Margaret's University and is currently undertaking a practice- based research degree at Glasgow University into the compositional structures of pervasive performance.
