Profile: Indepen-Dance
 |
 |
Indepen-dance was founded by Karen Anderson in April 1996 on the principle of access, participation and integration. |
As a dance practitioner involved in social work, Karen realised that people with learning disabilities enjoyed and greatly benefited from expressing themselves in non-verbal and creative ways and believed that people with disabilities had a fundamental right to experience and have access to qualitative art forms.
Indepen-dance provides dance and creative movement to adults with learning disabilities and their carers in the following ways:
Eight x Weekly dance classes at Tramway and CCA Training workshops with practitioners from across the UK (4/5 per year) Professional performance projects (2 per year) Outreach Dance Work to special schools and nurseries.
Throughout the year the company performs work of high artistic quality created in collaboration with professional choreographers and dancers. Indepen-dance is committed to integration rather than segregation, and all activities are offered to people with and without disabilities, offering individuals the opportunity to learn from each other and share in a creative experience. |

Indepen-dance is committed to promoting opportunities, building stronger communities, promoting inclusion and tackling the barriers that prevent individuals with learning disabilities from participating in and benefiting fully from a high quality arts provision.
