David Hughes in profile

Following his success of his first one man show Map in 2002, David Hughes will be touring Scotland and the UK with his second solo show, which includes especially commissioned works by three of Europe’s leading contemporary choreographers; Pit Fong Loh, Cesc Gelabret and Javier de Frutos. The programme also includes the revival Siobhan Davies’ L’Apres Midi d’un Faume.

David Hughes, regarded as one of Britain’s most respected dancers, began his dance training with Nadine Senior at Harehills Youth Group in Leeds, before studying at London Contemporary Dance School.

A founder member of Images Dance Company, David joined Janet Smith & Dancer 1986 and after working with David Massingham and Jane Dudley, danced for six years with London Contemporary Dance Theatre, after its closure he joined Rambert Dance Company.

David created the original role of the Swan in Adventures in Motion Picture’s famous Swan Lake. He worked with Mark Bruce and dancers in Dance Hall at Louse Point, and danced for two years with Siobhan Davies Dance Company.

In 1999/2000 David created and performed the solo show Map with choreographies especially commissioned for him by leading dance makers such as: Robert Cohan, Christopher Bruce, Siobhan Davies and Wayne McGregor. Map was toured nationally in 2002, to great reviews.

In recent years, David has guested with Rambert Dance Company, Oktana Dance Company (Greece), Random Dance Company in Germany, and Phoenix Dance Company. He spent 2004 touring Scotland as a guest dancer with Alan Greig’s X-Factor Dance Company, and danced in the title role of Scottish Opera’s The Minotaour.
