Arts and communities in Scotland
Some areas in Scotland have, in the past, had few arts organisations working in the area, few facilities and low investment in arts and culture.
Over the years we have seed-funded arts officer posts in 12 local authorities where there had previously been no dedicated arts post. Through our Local Authority Partnership scheme, we have invested over £1 million in 11 local authority areas to increase opportunities for people to take part in the arts. This money has levered over £500,000 additional investment and has helped the local authorities to increase the capacity of their arts teams, support voluntary and community based arts and to run programmes which target disadvantaged groups in their areas.
In 2004, South Lanarkshire Council was awarded £120,000 of National Lottery funding through the Scottish Arts Council towards strengthening their Arts Development team. The team is now based at Hamilton Town House, pictured above, which also received lottery funding as part of a £9.6 million refurbishment programme.
