Kapwani Kiwanga

Arts Trainee of the month - March 2005

Creative technical and administrative skills in digital media work, Edinburgh Mediabase
Educational background: Bachelor of Arts (Honours), McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Kapwani Kiwanga (Portrait) 2004; Photo: Kwesi Rapahel, Cagedligt 'My passion is documentary film-making.  The traineeship has given me a realistic understanding of how Scottish film, TV and video industries are structured.  This has allowed me to see where I, as a film-maker, can make a creative contribution.  Furthermore, my work at Mediabase aims to nurture a Scottish culture which retains its diverse talent in the aforementioned industries therefore making it a more exciting place to work.'

A two-time BAFTA Scotland nominee, Kapwani was appointed Training Development Co-ordinator at Edinburgh Mediabase in 2004 with a remit to develop BME (black and minority ethnic) participation in and use of Mediabase’s resources.  She set up Diverse Screen, a pilot programme in video production training for BME individuals, with generous funding from BBC Scotland, Craignish Trust and the Scottish Arts Council.  The final works of the 20 Diverse Screen participants were exhibited at Edinburgh Filmhouse in December before industry professionals.  This pilot was a tremendous success with many students continuing on to work and or develop projects in the moving image industry.

Kapwani is currently working for Young People Speak Out as its development and project worker and is developing a number of documentary and experimental projects.
