'The year at Project Ability has been an amazing experience and given me a deep insight into how a professional arts organisation actually operates. |
From the very start, I worked in the community and gallery workshops assisting other artists, and being involved in the management and delivery of projects. I learnt a great deal from the amazing people I worked with, their enthusiasm and creativity really rubbed off. After a few months, I began my own workshops at Project Ability using the new ideas I had picked up, combined with my experience in the visual arts. It was an exciting moment when the work created during these sessions went on display for the Snapshots exhibition.
| My time at Project Ability and Trongate studios also gave me the chance to experiment with new work. This included organising the photography darkroom in the Trongate studios and getting the artists involved in photography. |

I was asked by the Trongate studios to produce a display for their exhibition which portrayed the artists in their working space. Over a period of a few months I got to know the artists really well and with their creative input and help produced a wonderful display for Ten Years On. Time flew by with other equally rewarding projects at schools and community centres. There were exhibitions every month, art fairs, talks, seminars, training and, most importantly, support from management. All of this shared knowledge has given me a great understanding of what it takes to be a working artist in Scotland. The year culminated in a joint exhibition of Regeneration, a series of personal work curated with Sadia Gul Ibrahim. This was a memorable event and one that gives me confidence in my future working practice. The year had many other memorable moments and encounters with amazing new people, far too many to mention. However they are all responsible for making my year as a trainee at Project Ability a great yin.'
