Waiting Room, by Isabel Wright, directed by Nazli Tabatabai

Two women bound together by a dark secret hide in an abandoned school room to survive an unnamed faith-civil war. This sensual and playful production moves ritualistically towards truth and freedom.

Marah is driven by the injustices she has witnessed and searches for facts to make sense of her world.  Her daughter-in-law Naomi is haunted by nightmares but dreams of a brighter future.  The relationship between the two women is riddled with love and hate.

Waiting Room has been nominated for the Amnesty International Freedom of Expression Award at the Fringe, as well as the Total Theatre Awards.

ZENDEH

Launched at the Traverse Theatre in June 2005, ZENDEH aims to create new artistic work across artforms, with one-off productions as well as productions available for touring.  It's commitment is to create collaborations with all disciplines, with both individuals and organisations.  Through new writing, new work and re-imagining of classics, ZENDEH will explore and express humanity by being open to artistic ideas including; the female experience, migration, hidden worlds, displacement and identity.

'ZENDEH is a Farsi word, translated it means ALIVE, it is a word that inspires me to create artistic work that explores our evolving identities and human experiences. As an Iranian living in Scotland identity is never far from my thoughts. I am passionate about working with a diverse range of practitioners and art forms to create quality new works that communicate to the world.'

ZENDEH has a commitment to continually developing a dedicated culturally diverse ensemble of actors and related practitioner and will focus on working with Iranian, Scottish and International theatre makers.  Each ZENDEH project will have an integrated participatory programme that feeds into the research and development of the company.

Nazli Tabatabai

Nazli Tabatabai

Nazli Tabatabai was born in Iran and as a child with her parents migrated to Scotland, her adopted homeland.  She has an honours degree in Media Technology from the University of Paisley, where she specialised in digital video.  Working continuously in the Arts and Theatre since her first foray into Lothian Youth Theatre, she trained as a Director at Haymarket Theatre Leicester on an Arts Council England Directors award.

Nazli has directed and worked with numerous companies and venues which include:

Bad Medicine, Derby Playhouse
Tristan & Mr Poppins, DR2
Stain Remover, Citadel
He Makes His Own Plans, BBC Radio Drama London
and Waiting Room, Gateway Theatre QMUC.

As well as directing, she’s currently the visiting lecturer of directing at Queen Margaret University College.
