Welcoming the Year of the Rooster

Chinese Community Development Partnership
Edinburgh Chinese School
Find out more

The Chinese New Year is the oldest and most famous festival in the Chinese calendar, and marks both the beginning of the Lunar New Year and the arrival of spring.  2005 is the ‘Year of the Rooster’, and was welcomed on 9 February 2005.  The rooster is a symbol of intuition, honesty, intelligence, caring, and good planning.

In Scotland, the Chinese New Year celebration has become a regular feature of the annual cultural calendars, particularly in Edinburgh and Glasgow, and events are popular not only within the Chinese community but with people from all over Scotland.  The celebrations have regularly served as a major forum for artists of Chinese backgrounds to exhibit their talent to the general public in Scotland.

The Scottish Arts Council is proud to support arts events celebrating the New Year.  Read on to find out more about the celebrations of two organisations which received funding this year.

The Scottish Arts Council has awarded funding for the artistic elements of this annual event for the past three years, in partnership with Glasgow City Council, and the popularity of the event continues to grow.
